Green burial in Hong Kong: gardens of remembrance and sea scattering

Last checked against official sources: 17 Oct 2026

How to scatter ashes in an FEHD garden of remembrance (free) or at sea in Hong Kong waters, plus the Green Burial Central Register and Internet Memorial Service.

Scattering in a garden of remembrance

FEHD has 14 gardens of remembrance at 10 public columbaria, and scattering there is free. The applicant must hold the Permit to Take Away Cremated Ashes or be authorised in writing by the holder, and apply at least 14 days before the scattering date at FEHD's cemeteries and crematoria office in Hung Hom or Happy Valley.

The gardens on Cheung Chau, Lamma and Peng Chau are only for eligible Islands District indigenous villagers or residents.

Scattering at sea

With FEHD approval, ashes can be scattered in three designated areas of Hong Kong waters (east of Tap Mun, east of Tung Lung Chau, south of West Lamma Channel). Apply at least 10 days ahead; FEHD charges no processing fee and normally approves within 5 working days of a complete application. Apart from the ashes and a handful of fresh petals, nothing else may be put into the sea.

Central Register and online memorials

You can record a wish to have your ashes scattered in the Green Burial Central Register so your family knows. The Government also runs an Internet Memorial Service for paying tribute online.
