How public niche allocation works in Hong Kong

How to apply for an FEHD public niche: fees, allocation of extendable niches, Islands District eligibility, and how many niches are available now.

Who runs public niches

Public columbaria are run by the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD). FEHD publishes the new niches each columbarium can allocate now; we read that list daily and show it below.

The Wo Hop Shek buildings share one allocation list, so they share one row. Figures change daily; check FEHD's lookup before applying.

How niches are allocated

  • Extendable niches at Wo Hop Shek Columbarium Phase VI, Cape Collinson-San Ha, Shek Mun and Tsang Tsui columbaria are allocated in rounds announced by FEHD.
  • New niches at Cheung Chau, Lai Chi Yuen, Lamma and Peng Chau columbaria are only for eligible residents of the Islands District.
  • FEHD has stopped taking new applications for reused niches.
  • Families who already hold a public niche can apply to place additional ashes in it (a fee applies).

While you wait

Ashes can be kept temporarily at a government crematorium; a monthly fee applies after the first two months (see the fee table). Scattering in a garden of remembrance is another option and is free; see the green burial guide.
